I am Me Paintings
Investigating the theme of identity, first graders wrote poems about themselves and the things that made them unique. Students illustrated their poems and painted with watercolors using the salt and watercolor technique. Students glued a photograph of themselves and their poem to finish their collage.
ROYGBIV Birds
First grade students learned about how primary and secondary colors make up the rainbow. Students drew one bird for each color of the rainbow and added details to give their birds personality. We used decorative paper to collage the wings.

Clay Bugs
First graders created an imaginary insect species out of clay. We painted using watercolors, added pipe cleaner legs, and created a habitat out of paper for our insects to live in.
Cityscape Collage
First grade students designed a city and a form of transportation to go along with their city. Students looked for patterns in magazines and cut out shapes to create their own architecture. We looked at pictures of transportation and glued our drawn transportation to a popsicle stick so that it could drive across town.
Mosaics
In addition to helping make the school wide mural, first graders have been working on an individual mosaic project. Each student thought of their own composition idea and learned the mosaic making process. We first glued our tiles down using tile mastic glue and then grouted our pieces so that they stuck down.
ROY G BIV Birds
Students learned all about the color spectrum. We used corrugated cardboard to paint the background and talked about texture. Students added decorative paper to make wings and fun details (hats, mustaches, worms, glasses, etc.) to create birds with personality. They turned out so cute!
